Under the Sea! (Kinder Prep)

We had a “whale” of a good time this week studying the ocean!

We enjoyed reading about and learning about many ocean animals this week, including dolphins, whales, sharks, fish, and octopuses! To go along with our theme, we did several fun ocean crafts. We made a paper bag jellyfish to practice our scissor skills, had fun creating sea turtles, painted our own wax resist water color ocean paintings, and even created beautiful Cheerio starfish!

We definitely learned a lot working in our centers this week. Throughout the week, we practiced measuring and adding using the Great White Shark that swam into our room! We added together the dots on dice to "feed" our shark numbers on fish, and also used a variety of objects to measure how long the shark was. We also worked on our graphing skills with a fun ocean animal bar graph game. We practiced writing our letters and sight words in sand boxes, read our ocean sight word books, independently looked at and read the library ocean books in our room, practiced rhyming with our treasure chest rhyming game, and worked on beginning sounds. We were so busy learning!

We also had a lot of fun with science this week! We loved a second visit from Mrs. Rose, this time to do a science experiment with us. See if your child can remember what makes a shark float in the water! We also did a fascinating "walking water" experiment to learn about primary and secondary colors as well as water absorption. See if your child can tell you about it! To go along with our conversations about the ocean levels, we looked at and discussed our very own "ocean in a jar" that our Bridge friends made for us! Finally, we made a class graph of our favorite ocean animals and compared these numbers.

We loved measuring the shark!

Looking for letters on our pirate ship!

Such a careful writer. :)

Making sea turtles is serious business!

Someone was an expert rhymer!

Such careful work!

We loved painting our jellyfish!

We had fun at our independent
reading station!

Our addition shark was very hungry!

This sweet friend did beautiful work!

Fun with graphing!

Look at that good handwriting!

As always, we enjoyed our time in the green room as well as our morning fine motor activities! We even got to learn some ocean yoga this week! We had fun sharing our letter Q items and hearing from Lincoln, who took home the "All About Me" box this week.

Bridge Class

We had a fun week learning about the ocean in Bridge class as well! We spent Monday talking about the zones of the ocean and created an ocean in a jar using liquids of different densities. We also created a super cool paper plate whale! We spent a lot of time reading more nonfiction books about sharks, dolphins, and whales! In our centers, we worked on beginning sounds, writing sentences, and addition. We also used paint swatches to create an ocean zones craft, had fun printing in play dough with seashells, and continued to practice our writing skills in sand. What a fun week!
