We had a great week of learning about our country! In honor of Presidents’ Day, we focused mainly on our presidents. Some of our topics of discussion included the responsibilities of a president, presidential elections and voting, and what presidents appear on different coins. We also discussed George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and looked at the characteristics of the American flag.
To go along with reading the book Duck for President, we had fun making "president" ducks with our hand prints... You can check them out in the hallway! After talking about Abraham Lincoln, we also constructed Popsicle stick log cabins! We also enjoyed learning about how presidents appear on our money. We did a great job sorting coins and investigating what liquids help us clean coins the best! See if your child can remember what we used to clean our pennies!
We also discussed what it means to be a good citizen of our nation. We read a book titled Being a Good Citizen that talked about how we can be good citizens as children. We tied this theme in with our Bible theme for the week on loving and helping one another. See if your child can tell you Matthew 15:12 or remember what the good Samaritan did to help the man who was hurt on the side of the road.
Of course, we also worked on a variety of literacy and math skills this week! We are doing such a great job with our numbers one through ten and are now working on accurately counting to 20. Our letter of the week was the letter K, and we continued to review past letters.
What a great week we had!
See if your child can...
1. Tell you the February Bible Verse (Love one another as I have loved you.)
2. Tell you a few words that start with the S sound.
3. Count to 20.
4. Tell you about the good Samaritan.
5. Name something they would do if they were president.
