If You Give a Preschooler a Cookie...

We were so excited to be back together this week! Mrs. Nicole and I were amazed at how everyone was able to get right back to our usual routine without missing a beat (even after not being there for a few weeks)! I spent some time reflecting on our last five months together, and it is amazing how much they have grown and developed! We are so proud of them.

This week we enjoyed doing an author study of Laura Numeroff. If you have any of her books at home, they might be a fun selection to read with your child in the next few weeks. Some of the books that we read were If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, If You Give a Pig a Pancake, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, and Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers. To go along with these books, some of our fun activities included making our own mouse puppets, making paper plate pancakes with syrup, matching pancake letters in our sensory bin, sorting colors in muffin tins, and creating a cookie graph.

We had several new skills we focused on this week. Our letter of the week was U, but we also began doing initial sound sorts. With a little help, everyone in the class did a fantastic job on this! This is definitely something that they could easily practice at home! We also moved on to the number 6 this week but also reviewed one-to-one correspondence with the numbers 1-5. This is something that will be tested at the end of January, so it is also something you can continue to practice at home! We also took the opportunity to start focusing more on cutting this week. We will be practicing this every day during the craft time. This week they cut their own triangles for their mouse puppet and their own butter squares for their pancakes! We also spent more time on writing letters independently!

With it being so cold this week and waiting on the green room to be back in use next week, we did some activities in our classroom. We love our yoga time with Mrs. Nicole and also enjoyed doing our letter mat hopping and Go Noodle dancing.

We can't wait to see everyone next week!

Here are a few things you can ask your to do this week....

1. Sort two initial sounds. **Try laying out two different letters and see if your child can sort 5-6 pictures of words that begin with this letter. (You might need to emphasize and repeat the first sound several times to help them hear it.)
2. Show you how to hold their scissors and cut a straight line.
3. Can match the correct number of objects to the numbers 1-5.
4. Identify the number 6.
5. Tell you what sound the letter U makes.

We were all so focused on our cookie letter writing!

Using scissors is quite the challenge!

Our classroom library was in full use!

We celebrated this sweet girl's birthday!

We love yoga time!

Someone matched all the letters!

This smartie found all the letter Us by himself!

Pancake painting fun!

Quite the stack of pancakes!

We are all playing together so nicely!

We had fun letter stomping!
