Snow is Falling!

Snow was in the air this week! We had "snow" much fun learning about ice and snow!

Our inquisitive minds are growing each week! We had fun learning about how every snowflake is unique and different... Every single one. Our secret message that we uncovered this week told us that God made each of us unique (just like the snowflakes). We also discussed ice and how it forms and melts. To try to figure out why we put salt down on roads and sidewalks when it snows, we did our own salt water experiment. See if your child can remember what happened when they dropped salt water on their ice cubes.

We also had fun talking about snowmen this week! We read the books Sneezy the Snowman, Snowmen All Year, and Snow Dog, Go Dog! We also had fun painting our own melted snowmen as well as snowmen out of our names! Check out our bulletin board in the hallway to see these snowmen!

Our letter of the week was the letter I... I is for igloos and ice! We also focused on the letters 7 and 8. We are doing such a good job counting and identifying numbers! Everyone in our class is also an expert at colors and shapes! Mrs. Nicole and I are so impressed. We are learning so much!

Here are some things to ask your child this week... Can you...
1. Tell me the sound letter I makes?
2. Write an eight in the air and count eight objects?
3. Explain what happens to ice when salt water touches it?
4. Tell me something awesome about a snowflake?
5. Draw a triangle, square, circle, and rectangle?

Someone wanted a one-eyed snowman. :)

What a good job we are doing on
our independent work!

Into the Arctic

We had another great week in our class! This week, we learned lots of fun facts about animals in the Arctic... penguins, polar bears, seals, walruses, moose, and more!

Our letter of focus for the week was the letter W...W is for winter! We enjoyed doing winter painting with Arctic animals and making our very own penguin magnets to take home. We also had lots of fun dancing like penguins, reading about polar bears, and feeding number fish to the giant penguin who came to visit our room! Our science experiment of the week was testing out how blubber helps animals stay warm in the Arctic. While Crisco might not be blubber, it showed us how blubber can block the cold of ice water!

We worked on a variety of skills this week! What a smart bunch we are! Cutting with scissors in straight lines and tracing curved lines have been a big focus for January. We also continued to do initial letter sorts with picture cards and worked on building our names. We have begun to practice counting from 10 to 20. The teen numbers can sure be a little tricky, but we will conquer them! Our one-to-one correspondence has improved immensely, and we do a great job identifying all of our colors!

Our Bible focus of the week was on Jesus walking on the water. How amazing this was! We were reminded that Jesus really can do ANYTHING!

To add on to this week's fun, we enjoyed a visit from my mom! We sure loved visiting with Mrs. Shari!

Here are some things to ask your child this week! Can you....

1. Identify the letter W and its sound?
2. Write the numbers 6 and 7 in the air?
3. Build your name? Write your name? (You should have found a name tracing card and name puzzle in your child's bag.)
4. Tell me three animals who live in the Arctic?
5. Count to 20?

Having fun in our "ice" sensory bin!
