Skeletons, Spiders, and Silly Monsters!

What better things to learn about the week before Halloween than skeletons and spiders? This week’s theme allowed for lots of scientific learning (as well as lots of fun of course)! Did you know a spider can be the size of a dinner plate? Or that your rib cage protects your organs? These are just a couple of fun facts we learned. Lots of great conversations this week!

We really did pack in a lot of learning. You will see our spider chart below that we made. Each spider leg had one fun spider fact on it. We also worked on rhyming this week with our fun "Very Hungry Spider" poem. Make sure to check this poem out in your poetry folder. To go with our skeleton theme, we enjoyed working with a fun magnetic skeleton puzzle! We also sang several songs that helped us learn about the bones in our body.

Our class shared many smiles as we shared our emotion pumpkins with our friends! Thank you for doing these with your child. They were all so creative!!

We also showed our creativity by making spiders from pine cones and monsters from shapes. We had fun working on our fine motor skills and on one-to-one correspondence by putting eyes on monsters, weaving spider webs, and more. We even used tweezers to grab spiders out of their spider webs and worked on shape sorting with our fun shape monsters.

To continue our theme on how God is always with us, our Bible focus this week was on the story of Gideon! See what your child can remember.

Assessments were started this week (and will be sent home next week). These are very low key and simply give us an idea of what skills we need to focus on with each child. We are not assessing any letters at this point but are checking to see who can identify their name. We have started working on ordering and saying the letters in their names in class (which is a great activity for home too)!

We look forward to the Halloween party next week! Your child is welcome to wear his or her costume... We simply ask that these costumes be easy to get on and off in order to still be able to go to the restroom independently. Thank you in advance!!

This week, see if your child can...
1. Say the letters of their name with you.
2. Practice October's memory verse.
3. Find a spider in your yard (or house)!
4. Write a zero! (We reviewed 0-5 this week.)
5. Find 10 leaves and count them.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin!

We wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the generous Trike-a-Thon donations! We are already enjoying some new additions in our classroom and in our school! We are also looking for some new exciting learning tools that will be arriving in our room in the next two weeks!

This week was also filled with lots of pumpkin fun! We definitely missed everyone over fall break and had an exciting first week back to school.

Everyone enjoyed learning about how pumpkins grow and what's inside a pumpkin. We read several pumpkin books that focused on the life cycle of a pumpkin and the physical characteristics of a pumpkin. Did you know some pumpkins can be blue?! We even got to see inside one, carve one, and taste pumpkin seeds this week! Maybe they can feel the pulp themselves if your family carves a pumpkin together at home!

To go along with our pumpkin theme, we used shapes to create our own paper Jack-o-lanterns. We also used pumpkins to review the letters we have done so far (M, F, P, Z, E, and A).  Our poem of the week was "Five Little Pumpkins." You can check your child's poetry folder to do this fun poem together!

In our centers this week, we enjoyed counting pumpkin seeds, working on shape matching with pumpkin cutouts, working on our cutting skills to make a pumpkin puzzle, and practicing tracing with pumpkin vines. We also had a grand time hammering golf tees into our pumpkin and checking to see if pumpkins sink or float. We even did a fun pumpkin candy science experiment!

We did a few things to review fire safety to follow the firemen coming before fall break. Here is the link to our fun song if you want to do it again with your child! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_5FqaWTj9c

Our Bible focus was on Daniel. This month, we are focusing on how we do not have to fear because God is always with us! Make sure to check out our fun October song about our Bible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzJ8qcOBVhM

We can't wait to see them next week for more fall fun!

This week, see if your child can...
1. Create his or her own Jack-o-lantern with the pumpkin project paper we sent home.
2. Paint or carve a jack-o-lantern face that includes squares, circles, and triangles. (Review these shapes.)
3. Practice the "Five Little Pumpkins" poem together.
4. Look for the letters M, F, E and P in books around the house.
5. Tell you the story of Daniel!
